What's our position on climate?
The Environment was a hot topic this week
Our candidates may have differing views on other things, but on this topic, we are all 100% united. We deeply want to safeguard our environment for future generations. Time is short and we want to act fast. We are frustrated by the people in power who drag down the ambition and the focus we need to make the urgent and necessary changes to mitigate the physical and economic risks of climate change.
Speaking of the environment, have you ever wondered what Northern Beaches Council under Michael Regan's leadership is doing about reducing emissions? We are proud to say that we want net zero emissions in our community by 2030. We have already reduced council emissions by 80% by re-negotiating a contract to power all council sites, street lights and parks with renewable energy, already saving council $1.7 million over the next 7 years.
As well as saving ratepayers money, this has also helped us not only be on track for net zero emissions for 2050, but to be on track for net zero emissions in 2030. We have just won a national award for our efforts in accelerating the path to net zero too. Read more about that here.
We can go further too, if you vote more independents into council on Dec 4.
You can check out the action plan here and see the sustainability actions here.
We watched closely what happened in Glasgow but were have never waited. We have forged ahead like many big businesses in Australia - to deliver our own reductions in carbon emissions, diverting waste from landfill, buying land to preserve the tree canopy, revising the LEP/DCP to stop inappropriate development and to drive down our emissions and show leadership that will impact global targets.
Let us know on Dec 4th if the environment is important you as well.
UPDATE: We had the opportunity to explain in 3 minutes what we would each do for the Environment in our wards and we would LOVE for you to understand how passionate we are about protecting our environment for immediate climate risks and for future generations.
